Have you ever whispered, “God, I want to know You… I just don’t know how”?
Maybe you didn’t grow up in church. Maybe you did—but faith feels distant now. Maybe life got busy, painful, or confusing.
If your heart is asking this question, that’s not random. That’s an invitation.
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” — Jeremiah 29:13
If you want to know God but don’t know where to begin, take a deep breath. You don’t need perfect words. You don’t need a theology degree. You don’t even need to “clean yourself up” first.
You just need a willing heart.
1. Start With an Honest Conversation
Knowing God begins the same way any relationship begins: conversation.
Prayer doesn’t have to be polished. It can sound like:
- “God, are You real?”
- “I don’t understand You.”
- “Help me.”
- “I want to know You.”
God isn’t intimidated by your questions, doubts, or emotions. In fact, throughout Scripture, we see real people wrestling honestly with Him.
You don’t have to impress God. Just show up.
2. Learn Who God Is Through Jesus
Christianity isn’t about religion—it’s about relationship.
Jesus isn’t just a teacher or historical figure. He is the Son of God who came to bridge the gap between humanity and God. When you look at Jesus—how He forgives, heals, teaches, and sacrifices—you see the heart of God.
If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.
He is patient with seekers. Gentle with doubters. Compassionate with the hurting.
And He invites you closer.
3. Read the Bible — But Start Simple
The Bible can feel overwhelming. Sixty-six books? Where do you even begin?
Start here. Three essential books for beginners:
| Book | Focus | Why Start Here |
| John | Who Jesus is, His love, His mission | Shows Jesus in action—how He lived, loved, and related to people |
| Psalms | 150 Hebrew prayers, songs, and poems | Teaches you how to honestly worship, trust, and cry out to God |
| Proverbs | Practical wisdom for daily living | Shows you how to make good decisions and trust God with real life |
How to read effectively:
- Choose one book to start with
- Read a small portion (1-2 paragraphs) per day
- Ask yourself these three questions:
- What does this show me about God?
- What does this show me about myself or others?
- How does this apply to my life right now?
Pro tip: You don’t need to understand everything. Understanding grows with time. Relationship grows with consistency.

4. Find a Faith Community
You were never meant to figure this out alone.
Community strengthens faith. It reminds you that you’re not crazy for believing—and that you’re not alone when you struggle.
Where to start:
- Online: Many churches stream services or offer beginner Bible studies (no pressure to show up in person yet)
- Newsletters: Subscribe to faith-based content like the Raven Review newsletter (weekly parenting tips, blog posts, and devotionals)
- Small Groups: Look for beginner-friendly studies at local churches or online communities
- Churches: When you’re ready, visit a church known for welcoming newcomers
5. Understand Grace — The Heart of Christianity
Here’s something many people miss:
You don’t earn your way to God. You don’t become “good enough” and then approach Him.
The revolutionary message of Christianity is grace—undeserved, unconditional love.
- Jesus made the way through His death and resurrection
- You now have direct access to God—not through perfection, but through faith
- It’s not about trying harder — it’s about trusting Him
6. Be Patient With the Process
Getting to know God is not a 7-day challenge. It’s a lifelong relationship.
- Some days you’ll feel close to God
- Some days you’ll feel nothing
- Some days you’ll have questions or doubts
- All of this is normal.
Faith grows like a seed: quietly, slowly, steadily. Keep showing up.
For the Mom Who’s Overwhelmed
If you’re in a season of diapers, dishes, deadlines, and exhaustion, knowing God doesn’t require hours of quiet time.
It might look like:
- Listening to Scripture while folding laundry
- Whispering a prayer in the school pickup line
- Reading one verse before bed
- Pausing to notice God’s presence during your commute
God meets you in ordinary places. He’s not waiting for your life to slow down. He’s inviting you into peace right now.
Ready to Take the First Step?
You can begin right now. You might pray something like this:
“God, I don’t know everything about You, but I want to. If You’re real, reveal Yourself to me. Teach me. Forgive me. Lead me. I’m open.”
There’s no magic formula. Just a surrendered heart.
And here’s the beautiful truth: If you’re seeking Him, He’s already drawing you.
You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out
Faith doesn’t start with certainty. It starts with curiosity.
If you want to know God but don’t know where to begin:
- Seek Him (in prayer and Scripture)
- Speak to Him (honestly, without pretense)
- Read about Him (start simple)
- Trust Him (one small step at a time)
He promises that those who seek will find. And that promise includes you.
