Family Movie Night

When Summer Doesn’t Go As Planned

Didn’t we all have a picture in our minds of what summer would look like?

Maybe you imagined family game nights, peaceful mornings with your Bible, backyard barbecues, and smiling kids who magically got along.

Instead…

The house is messy.

The kids are bored.

The schedule feels chaotic.

And somehow everyone is hungry every thirty minutes.

If your summer isn’t going according to plan, you’re not alone.

When Our Expectations Meet Reality

I recently planned the perfect family afternoon.

We were going to take a long walk, eat lunch outside, and spend the afternoon playing games in the backyard.

Then the rain came.

Within minutes, every plan disappeared.

I’ll admit—I was frustrated.

But instead of spending the afternoon outside, we curled up on the couch with blankets, popcorn, and a movie. We laughed, talked, and enjoyed a slower day together.

It wasn’t the day I planned.

It was the day God gave us.

Sometimes our greatest memories are found in the moments we never planned.

God Isn’t Limited by Our Schedules

We all make plans, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

But Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that while we make our plans, God establishes our steps.

He sees the bigger picture.

The canceled outing.

The interrupted schedule.

The unexpected detour.

None of it surprises Him.

When we hold our plans too tightly, frustration can keep us from seeing the blessings right in front of us.

Choosing Presence Over Perfection

It’s easy to spend an entire day wishing things had gone differently.

But what if, instead, we asked:

“Lord, what do You want me to see today?”

That simple question changes everything.

Maybe He’s inviting you to slow down.

Maybe your child needs your attention more than another activity.

Maybe your family simply needs a quiet afternoon together.

God often works in ordinary moments that don’t make it onto our summer bucket lists.

Three Simple Ways to Find Peace This Summer

Hold your plans loosely.

Make plans—but remember they’re only plans. Leave room for God to redirect your day.

Look for one blessing.

When something doesn’t go as expected, ask yourself, What’s one good thing happening right now?

Choose connection.

Your children won’t remember every activity you planned. They’ll remember how they felt when they were with you.

Sometimes a conversation on the couch becomes a greater memory than the expensive outing you had planned.

A Summer Worth Remembering

Friend, your summer doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. God isn’t waiting for your calendar to clear before He works in your family. He’s present in the messy kitchen, the rainy afternoons, the changed plans and the quiet moments you almost missed.

This week, instead of chasing the “perfect summer,” ask God to help you see the beauty in the one you’re living.

You may discover it’s exactly where He wants to meet you.
