What is the buddy walk?
Today was buddy walk day! This is our 17th year of attending the buddy walk. What is the buddy walk? It is a celebration and recognition of children and adults with down’s syndrome.
Understanding Down Syndrome
Before delving into the Buddy Walk, it’s essential to have a basic understanding of Down syndrome. Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. It results in developmental and intellectual delays, as well as distinctive physical features. Despite these challenges, individuals with Down syndrome lead fulfilling lives, achieve remarkable accomplishments, and contribute to their communities in various ways.
Origin of the Buddy Walk
The Buddy Walk began in 1995. It was created to commemorate Down Syndrome Awareness Month, which takes place in October. On September 28, 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed a resolution proclaiming October 1984 as National Down Syndrome Month. Over the years, this event has grown in popularity and has spread to countries worldwide. Its core mission is to promote acceptance and inclusion while raising funds to support local and national organizations dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with Down syndrome.
Unity
Down Syndrome Buddy Walk promotes hope, unity, and support. These walks, held annually in various communities around the world, bring together individuals, families, and friends to raise awareness, promote acceptance, and celebrate the unique abilities of people with Down syndrome.
Inclusion
Inclusion is at the heart of the Buddy Walk. It sends a clear message that individuals with Down syndrome are valued members of our society and deserve the same opportunities and respect as anyone else.
Fundraising
Buddy Walks raise funds for local and national organizations that provide essential support, resources, and services for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. These funds often go toward medical research, educational programs, and advocacy efforts.
Community Building
These walks create a sense of community and support for families affected by Down syndrome. They provide an opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences and challenges. In fact, John Barrasso (Wyoming Senator) shows up each year and talks to the families. There is a local band, University cheerleaders, firefighters and lots of fun activities and donated food to enjoy as well.
Love
The Down Syndrome Buddy Walk is not just an event; it’s a movement towards a more loving and accepting world. It reminds us that every individual deserves respect, opportunities, and love. By participating in the Buddy Walk, we can be examples to our children that all of God’s people matter. So, join a Buddy Walk near you, and be a part of this beautiful journey towards a more loving world. Together, we can make a difference.
