Exhaustion makes you spiritually vulnerable

Stay Alert – When Exhaustion Makes You Spiritually Vulnerable

There’s a kind of exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix.

The kind that comes from carrying too much for too long. The mental load. The constant decisions. The emotional weight of being “everything” for everyone.

And if you’re honest… you’re not just tired. You’re overwhelmed. Maybe even burned out.

But here’s what we don’t talk about enough: Exhaustion isn’t just physical—it’s spiritual.

When You’re Tired, You’re More Vulnerable

Spiritual rebellion doesn’t usually start with a bold, defiant choice.  It starts when you’re worn down.

When you’re too tired to open your Bible. Too overwhelmed to pray.  Too distracted to even notice how far your thoughts have drifted.

Not because you don’t love God… But because you’re running on empty.

And that’s exactly where the enemy likes to work.

1 Peter 5:8
“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”

I Didn’t Even Realize I Lost My Joy

When my kids were little, I was so exhausted I lost my joy.

I didn’t even realize it was happening.  I was just surviving—getting through one day at a time.

Somewhere in the middle of the diapers, the messes, the constant demands… joy quietly slipped away.

Around that same time, my eyesight started getting worse—or at least I thought it was. I remember going to the eye doctor, genuinely concerned.

“I can’t read the signs anymore,” I told him. “I think my eyesight is failing.”

He did the exam, looked closely… and then said something I didn’t expect:

“Your eyesight is fine. You’re just exhausted.”

That was it.

It wasn’t my eyes. It was my exhaustion.

And in that moment, something deeper clicked.

If exhaustion could blur my physical vision… how much more was it blurring my spiritual vision?

Because it wasn’t just street signs I had stopped seeing.

I had stopped noticing the quiet ways God was showing up in my everyday life.

When You’re Exhausted, You Stop Seeing Clearly

Exhaustion doesn’t just make you tired—it makes you miss things.

The small answered prayers. The moments of grace in your day.  The way God provides, comforts, and shows up in ordinary moments.

Not because He’s not there… but because you’re too worn down to see Him clearly.

Just like I couldn’t read the signs on the road, I had stopped recognizing the signs of God all around me.

But as I slowly began to rest and reconnect… I started seeing again.

Not perfectly—but more clearly.

I began to notice:

  • A moment of unexpected peace in a chaotic day
  • A verse that spoke exactly to what I needed
  • A kind word at just the right time
  • Strength I didn’t have on my own

God had never stopped moving. I had just been too exhausted to see it.

The Enemy Doesn’t Chase the Strong—He Watches the Weary

In 1 Peter 5:8, we’re warned to stay alert—and not by accident.

Peter compares the enemy to a lion.

Lions don’t chase the strongest animal in the herd. They look for the one who is isolated, distracted and worn down.

That was me.

And if you’re in a season of burnout… it might be you too.

Because burnout pulls you into survival mode. You stop reaching out. You stop noticing what’s shaping your thoughts. You stop seeing clearly—both physically and spiritually.

Burnout Isn’t a Sign You’re Failing

Your overwhelm is not proof that you’re failing. And it’s not a sign that God has stepped away.

It’s a signal.

A signal that you’ve been carrying too much for too long. A signal that it’s time to slow down and reconnect.

Stay Connected, Not Perfect

Peter’s instruction is simple:

Be self-controlled. Be alert. And stay grounded.

For a tired mom, this doesn’t mean doing more—it means noticing more.

It looks like:

  • Opening your Bible for a few minutes
  • Whispering a prayer in the middle of your day
  • Pausing long enough to recognize God’s presence
  • Choosing connection over isolation

Because when you stay connected, your vision clears.

You begin to see God again—not just in big moments, but in the everyday.

And a believer who is watchful, connected, and aware is not easy prey.

How Joy Begins to Come Back

My joy didn’t come back all at once.

It returned slowly… as my vision cleared. It was then that I started noticing God again. I stopped rushing past His presence and reconnected in small, consistent ways.

Joy didn’t come back because life got easier.

It came back because I could see again.

A Gentle Reset for the Overwhelmed Mom

If you’re in a hard season right now:

You don’t have to fix everything today. You don’t have to have perfect quiet times or do more.

Just start here: Notice God in the little things

Notice where you’ve been drifting. Notice where God is already present. Notice the small signs of His goodness in your day.

Even the smallest shift can begin to restore your heart.

Reflection Questions

  • Where has exhaustion been clouding my vision lately?
