Summer is right around the corner and I don’t know about you, but by this time of year I am usually exhausted and looking for fun ideas to keep my kids entertained so I can start to catch up and rest a bit myself.
Mom, the Summer Activity Director
Summer is great! In fact, it is my favorite time of year. But sometimes I get overwhelmed trying to figure out how to keep my kids occupied. I never get much done for myself in the summer because I am playing activities director for the kids. So today I share 5 tips to promote independent creativity and fun.
1 – Prepare the Supplies
Whether your kids love building activities, puzzles or crafts, having all the supplies ready helps them to be more independent. Stock up on art supplies, building blocks, and other creative materials. Items like colored pencils, colored paper, glue, puzzles and Legos can keep kids engaged in creative activities for hours.
Put related activities into bins with lids and keep them on a shelf or corner of the room where the kids can get them themselves. If the bins are similar size with lids they can be easily stacked, moved and stored when not in use.
2 – Prepare Safe Play Area
Create a dedicated space where kids can play independently without constant supervision. This can be a playroom, corner of the living room or even outdoor space. Throw a plastic tablecloth down for easy cleanup later.
3 – Create Routine
Establish a daily routine that includes designated times for independent play. Consistency helps kids know when to expect independent playtime and makes it a regular part of their day.
My preference is to have independent time 2 times per day. I schedule a craft, reading time, building blocks or puzzles late in the morning when I need to get lunch made and maybe even a crock pot or prep work for dinner. I usually have another time near dinner or right after dinner. Click HERE to get my summer schedule.
4 – Fun Jar
One task we do at the beginning of the summer is to write our favorite activities on popsicle sticks and put them in a vase or jar. When they do not know what to do, have them go pick an activity from the fun jar. Click HERE to find some activity ideas.
5 – Safety First
Remember, even though these activities can be done without constant supervision, it’s essential to ensure the safety of younger kids and periodically check on them to make sure they are having fun and not getting into trouble!
Foster Problem-Solving Skills
Using these tips can help foster independence in kids and keep them entertained. As they grow in their independence, they will not only be able to spend more time without your constant supervision, they will develop their creativity, self-confidence, and problem-solving skills.
Planning
With a little planning, a few supplies and bins, you can have a summer with more time for you. If planning is not your thing, check out my website for even more ideas and plans. Put in the effort now so you too can enjoy summer!
