We decided to be THOSE people and drove 15 hours each way to see the total solar eclipse. People who have never been in the totally think why bother? Let me tell you why… we saw the eclipse of August 21, 2017, dubbed the “Great American Eclipse” (only a 4 hour drive) and were so moved we wanted to see the next one also known as the “Great North American Eclipse”. My husband, 3 teen/adult kids and I drove all the way to Arkansas for the big event.
Importance of Family Connection
We met up with my husband’s family and spent the weekend together. It is always a blessing to reconnect and see how our relatives are living. So many in our extended family live far away and with our work and school schedules it is so tough to see everyone. Nothing brings family closer than a long drive somewhere! What a great event to come together and experience with family.
The Power of God
Witnessing the sun being temporarily obscured by the moon reminds us of the immense power of God. Despite our technological advancements, we are humbled by the forces of the universe. Oftentimes humans think we are so powerful and in control, yet this event reminds us who really is in control.
Perspective
Viewing a solar eclipse from different vantage points can provide unique perspectives on the event. We were camping in the middle of nowhere during the last eclipse so we really focused on the actual event and how nature responded in such a weird way. During this eclipse, people were around and it was fun interacting and coming together with perfect strangers. We spent 2 days in the town and we gained greater compassion and interconnectedness with others.
Unity
During a solar eclipse, people from all walks of life come together to witness this extraordinary phenomenon. Regardless of nationality, religion, or cultural background, we share in the wonder of the universe. This serves as a powerful metaphor for the importance of unity in humanity, reminding us that we are all interconnected.
Connection
We felt connected to others during this odd shared experience. People were so kind and interested in everything going on. One family flew into Dallas and realized they would miss the eclipse due to clouds, so they rented a car and drove to Arkansas. The energy and excitement of others was quite contagious. As the totality began people cheered and applauded. It felt as though we were a part of something bigger than humanity, bigger than the divisiveness and hate. Together, with patience and acceptance we can do so much more.
A solar eclipse is not just a rare astronomical event but a cosmic teacher, offering lessons in the importance of family connection, the power of God, perspective, unity, and human connection. As we reflect on that amazing moment, let us not only marvel at the moment but also reflect on the wisdom it imparts.
