It is usually around February when it really sets in for me. The holidays are over, everyone is back to work/school and the weather has been cold and cloudy for a while now.
As I try to keep a positive mindset this is when I usually start moping around and getting discouraged. God may be asking you and me the same question: How long will we mope because life hasn’t turned out like we thought it would?
Asking Why
Even if things aren’t tough, this season always tends to make me ask why? Why God, do you let these terrible things happen? Why are people grumpy and mean? Why does this season seem so difficult? No matter how painful the circumstances of life may be, God never intends for us to get stuck in discouragement.
The 3 things I do to get through this season are really quite simple.
First Pray
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
This verse emphasizes the power of prayer, trust in God, and the promise of a peace that goes beyond human comprehension. Turning to prayer and seeking God’s guidance can be a source of comfort for individuals facing struggles, including those related to depression. It encourages believers to bring their concerns to God and trust in His ability to provide peace and solace.
Second, Do Something New
Some of the new things I have done include coloring my hair crazy and fun, finding a new project/hobby or celebrating something new. This year I skipped the blue hair and failed craft project to celebrate Groundhog Day. I created a groundhog facts trivia game, find the groundhog scavenger hunt and pick your Groundhog name game. We ate whiskers and sauce (spaghetti) and groundhog sandwiches (pulled pork on slider buns). We watched the 1993 movie Groundhog Day and just enjoyed something to look forward to and celebrate. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or even successful (my resin coated table failure), just something to get you out of the mundane (just like the movie!).
Third, Keep Busy and Active
Activities change during the winter since the ice and snow prohibit my usual ventures. But that is ok. Sometimes that brings new adventures to enjoy. Walking in the mall, taking a new exercise class, or even doing some fun indoor challenges with my kids all count towards activity which in turn creates a more positive outlook. At some point in our moping around, God may come to us, too, and say, It’s time to get up and get going. Your life is not over. The story has more chapters to be written! Let go of your discouragement to take hold of your next assignment.
